Prof. Sani Abubakar Lugga

Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga was born in 1950 at Katsina, Katsina State of Nigeria and he occupies the traditional office of the Waziri (Vizier or Prime Minister) of Katsina, the second largest Traditional Council in Nigeria. He holds a Doctor of Management Degree, a Doctor of Philosophy in Conflict Management Degree and a Master of Business Administration Degree in addition to several Higher and National Diplomas. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants (Nigeria), a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Financial Managers (UK), a Fellow of the Institute of Journalism and Management (Nigeria), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Commerce of Nigeria and a Fellow of the London Graduate School (UK). Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga started his academic career as a humble Probationary Teacher with Katsina Native Authority Education Department in 1969. He is the key founder of Al-Qalam University, Katsina, where he lectured for several years without receiving any salary or allowances. He is a Visiting Professor of Management Studies at St. Clements Private Swiss University, Switzerland, which is a member of the St. Clements Education Group Worldwide and he is a Visiting Professor at Ecole Superieure Universitaire, Cotonou, Benin Republic, which is a private French/English Bilingual University. He is a Member of Al-Qalam University Board of Trustees and the Chairman of the Interim Governing Council of the proposed At-Tanzeel University, Kano. He is a Patron of Katsina State Students’ Association, Nigerian Universities Education Students’ Association, Kaduna Polytechnic Marketing Students’ Association and Ahmadu Bello University Agricultural Students’ Association. The Professor has so far written and published 47 books. One of his books that has relevance to the Niger Republic/Nigeria relations has been translated into the French language at the request of the Niger Republic Government. In addition, the Ethiopian Government has indicated interest in translating another of his books that is on the first Muslim Hijrah to Negash in ancient Habasha into the Ethiopian Amharic language. As a student, the Waziri served as National Public Relations Officer and later Acting National Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Technological Students (1974 to 1975). He was elected as the first National President of National Association of Kaduna State Students (now Katsina and Kaduna States) (1974 to 1976) and served as Kaduna Area Council Chairman and Member of the National Executive Council of Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (1974 to 1976). He was in politics as the first Kaduna State Chairman and the first Deputy National Chairman of the Youth Wing of the National Party of Nigeria NPN (1979 to 1981). He was also the Katsina State Treasurer of the National Republican Convention (1993 to 1994). He was elected as the first Katsina State Chairman of Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists (1988 to 1990) and elected as the National Secretary of the Association in 1992. The Waziri of Katsina worked with the defunct North-Central/Kaduna State Government from where he moved to the private sector in 1978. For about 16 years, he held Senior Management positions in several companies and was the first Nigerian to attain a General Management position in a German multinational manufacturing company in 1984 from where he retired into private business in 1992. He served Katsina State Government as the Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport in 1994. He also served Katsina State in various capacities including the Chairmanship of the Planning and Organising Committee of the Appeal Fund that launched the Katsina State Foundation headed by General Muhammadu Buhari in 1991; and the Chairmanship of the Publicity Committee of the Appeal Fund that launched the Katsina State Education Trust Fund headed by Justice Muhammadu Bello in 1997.  He was appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Katsina State Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (2003 to date) and the Chairman of Katsina State Committee on Employment (2004 to date).  He established the first rural factory, the Mashi Soap Factory, in Katsina State in 1987 and also established the first indigenous Magazine and Newspaper in Katsina State in 1989. He was a member of the Governing Council that established the first private Islamic College in Katsina State, the Othman Fodio College of Arabic and Islamic Studies.  He also single handily built and equipped the first and only Islamic Library in Katsina. The Waziri equally served the Nation in several capacities. He was a Nigerian Delegate to the International Conference on Polio Eradication held in Cairo, Egypt in 2006 and was a Delegate to the International Mauludcelebration held in Tripoli, Libya and in Timbuktu, Mali, in2006. He was a Member of the Board of the National Orientation Agency, Abuja (2010 to 2015) and is a Member of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (2012 to date). He was a Member of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North (Boko Haram Committee) (2013 to 2015) and was a Member of the Katsina State Committee on National Dialogue in 2013. He is the Chairman of the Social Welfare and Disaster Relief Committee of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (2013 to date) and is a Member of the General Purpose Committee of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (2014 to date).He is a Patron of the Society for the Unity of Muslims in Nigeria (2016) and a Member of the Executive Committee of Interfaith Initiative for Peace under the Chairmanship of His Eminence Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, and the co-Chairmanship of His Eminence Cardinal Onaiyekan, CON, (2017 to date). He is a Grand Patron of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (2008 to date) and is a Grand Patron of the Association of Nigerian Authors (2008 to date). Professor Sani Abubakar Lugga, the Waziri of Katsina, has over 50 prizes and awards and over 60 honorary appointments to his credit. His main hobby is philanthropy, service to humanity and championing peaceful co-existence. He is an Ambassador of the Universal Peace Federation, New York. The Professor wants to be remembered for humble worship of Allah (SWT) and diligent service to humanity.
