Ending Violence and Abuse against Children

Over one billion children globally experience violence annually, a troubling trend highlighted by the United Nations. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), ratified by Nigeria, guarantees every child protection from all forms of violence. Article 19 of the CRC and Sustainable Development Goal 16 underscore the need for legislative, social, and educational measures to reduce violence, particularly against children. In line with these goals, the Cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for Peace (COFP) hosted a one-day workshop on Thursday, 24th October 2024, at Ajuji Hotel Abuja, aimed at equipping teachers, caregivers, and religious instructors with tools to recognize, prevent, and address violence against children.

The workshop featured a presentation by Mr. Paul Yati, a representative from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), who called for collective efforts to combat human trafficking and emphasized the evolving tactics of perpetrators. COFP Team further highlighted on the strategies for child care and protection, exploring key legislation like the Nigerian Child Rights Act of 2003. Participants were engaged in discussions enabling them to gain insights into strategies that prevent and address child abuse, neglect, and exploitation. They pledged to apply the knowledge acquired in protecting children, combating violence and trafficking in their communities.
